Christian Kassung has been Professor of “Cultural Techniques and History of Knowledge” at the Humboldt University of Berlin since 2006. He is Vice Director of the “Hermann von Helmholtz Centre for Cultural Technology” and Principal Investigator at the Cluster of Excellence “Matters of Activity”. In the winter semester 2016/17 he was Fellow of the collegiate research group MECS “Media Cultures of Computer Simulation” at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg. Since 2018 he has been Dean of the Faculty of Cultural, Social and Educational Sciences.
The professorship “Cultural Techniques and History of Knowledge” combines research on cultural techniques as an implicit knowledge linking practices and things with the question of the historical, material and media conditions of knowledge. The research profile is thus not only strictly interdisciplinary, but also focuses primarily on the trading zones where new knowledge is created, disturbances are negotiated, hegemonic claims are asserted and translations are made. Concrete key areas of work are the history of knowledge and culture in the natural sciences, especially physics, the cultural techniques of industrialization, and the history and practice of technical media.
