Gorch Pieken studied history, art history and Dutch philology in Cologne. In 1994 he received his doctorate there with a dissertation on the system of rule and conflict behaviour in the Netherlands. From 1995 to 2005 he worked as a research assistant and curator at the German Historical Museum. Since 1999 he has been author and producer of documentary films for ZDF/ Arte, ARD/ Arte and 3Sat. From 2006 to 2011 he was responsible for the new concept and the new building of the Military History Museum (MHM) in Dresden. In 2011, he became Scientific Director and Head of Exhibitions, Collection, Education and Research at MHM. In 2016 he was appointed Deputy Director of the MHM.
Since April 2018, Gorch Pieken has been responsible for curating the opening exhibition of the Humboldt Laboratory.
